Everything from aircraft and boats to cars and motorcycles are powered by different types of engines. This quiz will focus on inline engines, V engines, diesel engines, and the steam engine, with a few more engine types thrown in to keep you on your toes!

Inline engines are constructed of cylinders in a single file row and are typically configured with four, six, and eight cylinders. Today's tractors tend to operate with a large inline-four engine. Inline-four engines were also used in the racing vehicles of yesterday.

The V engine is an internal combustion engine with its cylinders arranged in the shape of a V (hence the name). V engines are commonly manufactured in V4, V6, V8, V10, and even V12 models. V engines with 10 or more cylinders are popular choices for applications requiring high power, such as racing cars and sports cars. Typically, the cylinders within a V engine are arranged at a 60 degree angle. This means that they are more compact than an inline engine. V engines are also versatile. For example, a V6 and a V8 engine could be swapped for use in the same car, and V4 engines can even be used in boats.

Diesel engines, also known as compression ignition engines, are named after German engineer Rudolph Diesel. They can come in a variety of configurations and are very efficient despite emitting a significant amount of pollution. They're a popular choice for trucks thanks to their powerful horsepower. Even a medium diesel engine can produce up to 1,006 horsepower! Bigger diesel engines, such as those used for trucks, are so large that they could not even fit into a car.

Some less popularly known engines are petrol engines, wankel engines, radial engines, gas turbine engines, and flat-twin engines. While petrol engines are lightweight and can be manufactured for use in everything from lawnmowers to aircraft, they have some efficiency issues. Wankel engines use an efficient rotary design with a four stroke process: intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust. This means Wankel engines can sometimes produce more power than other, larger engines! Gas turbine engines are very powerful and are frequently used in trains and ships. Finally, flat-twin engines were invented in the late 1800s. They are a two-cylinder internal combustion engine. The cylinders are on opposite sides, hence the name flat-twin.

The steam engine was the original invention. They are no longer commonly in use due to their inefficiency. However, they were a great source of inspiration to early engineers.
